What is SSL?

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) enables data encryption on the internet, which shows you the owner of the website you are visiting, and protects communications between the web browser and servers.

How Do I know Vets Food World is secure?

When your browser connects to the Vets Food World website, it retrieves the SSL certificate and ensures that it has been issued by a 'Certificate Authority' the browser trusts and that it is being used by the web site for which it has been issued. If it fails on any one of these checks the browser will display a warning to the end user. If it succeeds, several security indicators are built into modern browsers to indicate that SSL is enabled. You will see that beginning of the URL changes from http:// to https://, which indicates you are on a secure server, and the padlock should display in your address bar (depending on your browser).

What happens when Servers and Browsers Connect?

  1. When you enter a section of the website that is secure, the browser attempts to connect to a server secured with SSL connection.
  2. The server then sends a copy of the SSL certificate to the browser.
  3. The browser checks the SSL certificate, to determine if it is trustworthy, then sends a message back to the server.
  4. The server then sends a digitally signed acknowledgement to start the SSL encrypted session.
  5. Encrypted data is then shared between the browser and server.

The browser determines whether or not to trust a SSL certificate by checking where the certificate is issued from. If the certificate is issued by a Certificate Authority that is known and trusted by the browser, the browser then agrees to show the SSL certificate and encrypt the data.

Vets Food World is secured by RapidSSL which provides upto 256-bit SSL protection.
